Most modern anglers use one of three different reel types: spinning, spincast or baitcasting.
And while you can always use whichever style you prefer, each offers its combination of strengths and weaknesses in a given set of circumstances.
Note that there are more reel types than the three detailed here — including fly-fishing reels, trolling reels and a few others, but they aren’t used as commonly by modern freshwater anglers.
Reels are often a confusing subject for anglers, especially those who are new to the sport. But that needn’t be the case. Reels are pretty simple devices and they play a major role in your fishing success.
